Performing well in front of an audience or anyone whose opinions we care about CAN be daunting. But we don’t have to power through our fears. We can employ proven performance enhancing techniques to help us do and feel our best on our big day.
Enter the “Quiet Eye Technique,” or QET. QET is the practice of focusing your eyes upon one aspect of your task, & while doing so, considering the necessary steps for a successful performance. In one of our favorite music blogs, Bulletproof Musician, Juilliard Professor of Performance Psychology, Dr. Noa Kageyama, discusses the takeaways of QET research and presents how we musicians can use the technique to our benefit.
Imagine yourself stepping up to perform. You feel your heart beating faster than usual. Take a moment to look at the audience, and think about how how fun music is. If you’re a guitarist, take a moment to look at your guitar and think about how your fingers will glide across the fretboard.
If you’re a singer, take a moment to look ahead at your sightline and thank your body for all the work it’s about to do and think about how good it will feel to sing your favorite parts of the song.
